Could Imran Khan Be Transferred from Adiala Jail Rawalpindi?

Islamabad/Rawalpindi: Pakistan’s intelligence agencies have recommended to the Punjab government that former Prime Minister Imran Khan be moved from Adiala Jail to another facility due to security concerns during his weekly meetings with family, lawyers, and PTI leaders.
The report notes that these meetings disrupt business on Adiala Road and affect hundreds of students traveling to schools in Rawalpindi. Local shopkeepers and residents have protested the recurring disturbances. Recently, Khan’s sisters and party workers staged a sit-in near the jail after meeting restrictions, and police used water cannons to disperse them, drawing criticism from PTI and other political parties.
A Punjab Prisons Department official said Adiala authorities would be consulted, but the final decision rests with the provincial government. Legal experts note that prisoners typically remain near the court handling their appeals, but transfers can occur without the inmate’s consent. PTI lawyers have warned of a strong legal and political response if Khan is moved.
Islamabad currently has no operational jail, though a facility in Sector H-16 is under construction and expected to open soon. Meanwhile, high-security prisons in Punjab, such as Sahiwal, house serious offenders.
