In the
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and other African countries, three valuable metals are found in significant quantities. These are known as
3T minerals or
conflict minerals:
- Tin (Sn)
- Tantalum (Ta)
- Tungsten (W)
Sometimes
Gold (Au) is also included with them, forming the category known as
3TG minerals.
Difference Between Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and 3T Metals
| Aspect |
Rare Earth Elements (REEs) |
3T Metals (Conflict Minerals) |
| Number of Elements |
17 elements |
3 metals (Tin, Tungsten, Tantalum) |
| Chemical Group |
Lanthanide series + Scandium + Yttrium |
Transition and post-transition metals |
| Major Deposits |
China, Australia, USA |
Congo, Rwanda, Burundi |
| Primary Uses |
High-tech devices, green energy, defense |
Soldering, capacitors, drill bits |
| Global Concern |
China’s dominance in supply chain |
Human rights violations in conflict zones |
Summary
- Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are the backbone of modern technology and consist of 17 chemical elements.
- 3T metals are industrially valuable but are not part of the rare earth category.
- Both are economically important, but their uses, sources, and geopolitical implications differ significantly.
